There is no doubt that the most talked about feature of this new camera is the 4K video capture capability, but in many other areas it can match, if not beat, most entry level DSLR’s on the market today. The FZ1000 is certainly at the top end of the competition and has an expensive price tag to match – but then it does set new standards in video and meets almost every other tick on the non video enthusiast’s wish list too.

Detailed Panasonic FZ1000EB Review
The FZ1000 model is Panasonic’s response to the Sony RX10, which took the Bridge Camera category to new levels when it was introduced in October 2013. When it launched in 2014 it was priced a few hundred pounds lower than the Sony. Game on.
With a 16x optical zoom and focal length range of 25 – 400mm the camera is excellent for wildlife or action photography of any kind and is of great interest to keen bird photography enthusiasts. It has the ability to take excellent still images from video capture so you needn’t always choose one format over the other in sticky or important situations.
With the inbuilt zoom range it’s like having a bank of SLR telephoto lenses in your bag without the hassle of carrying them.
The build quality of this camera lives up to the excellent standards we expect from Panasonic and it feels superb in the hand.
Also worthy of a mention is the 3” LED screen and excellent viewfinder giving greater choice and freedom of use.
The FZ1000 is certainly at the top end of the competition and has an expensive price tag to match – but then it does set new standards in video and meets almost every other tick on the non video enthusiast’s wish list too.
4k Video Recording Feature:
The clarity of a picture or video is determined from the number of pixels that it can clearly capture. Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ1000 digital bridge camera allows its users to record a high speed 4k video.
A 4k or ultra HD video is basically a high resolution video capable of capturing 4000 pixels, and almost 30 frames per second can be captured by this camera. The various available video features allows its user to introduce certain special effects to the videos, such as time lapse effect and certain animation effects can be added.
Compact and easy to use:
The camera, with its high end advantages, is compact in comparison to its competitors with similar lenses. The camera has a comfortable hand grip and the controls are also simple to use, thus adding to the ease of use. It also boasts of a newly developed processor, which offers an almost instant start-up time.
The camera can power up and click a photo in a matter of a second. The videos can be recorded directly on the SD card and can also be viewed with the most perfect display on a monitor or a television set.
Fast auto focus:
The auto focus(AF) of the camera is extremely sharp and fast. The auto focus motor can intelligently focus on its photographic subject 275% faster than its predecessors.
An auto focus of such a capacity will help the photographer to get the sharpest stills. In addition to this, the continuous auto focus capability will help the user to capture fast action shots.
The face and eye AF modes are also there to make sure that the most important aspects of a photograph are sharp and are focused in the best possible way.
Highly effective image sensor and a long zoom:
The camera’s lens provides 16x zoom for a 20.1 Megapixel 1″ sensor size.
The lens is fully capable of full and excellent coverage of the capture area and is highly sensitive to dim and low light. This provides the user with a very broad range of frames that can be captured. This is like a big prize for a photographer, for it eliminates the need to switch between different lenses.
The high resolution sensor will make sure that the images captured are extremely bright and sharp. The images captured are hence of the greatest quality.
Exceptional quality videos and photos:
The excellent resolution at which this camera captures videos and photos ensures that the video and photo quality is excellent and the details are extremely vivid.
There are certain photos that are very difficult to shoot for a photographer, owing to various reasons. A rapid moving subject that needs to be photographed can make it extremely difficult for a photographer to get a clear shot. In such a case, you can shoot a video and then extract still images from the 4k videos.
These still photographs are typically of a resolution of 8 megapixel. Such a high resolution guarantees a high image definition and a detailed picture, with the natural beauty of the subject kept intact.
Customer reviews of this camera are in the main excellent. It scores a teriffic 4.8 out of 5 stars from 34 reviews and receives high praise as you can see in the following comments.
One reviewer said-
The only possible drawback with the FZ1000, depending on what you want, is that this is quite a large camera. It is the same size as an entry level SLR with kit lens, but it is not as heavy. Try getting a 25mm to 400mm lens for an SLR though!
I can thoroughly recommend this camera.
Easily the best bridge camera on the market at the moment and a good option for the enthusiast thinking about stepping up to an SLR from a compact.
With regard to the feel of the camera, another buyer said-
The viewfinder screen is suberb, it’s bright when outdoors and comes with the ability to rotate and swivel it to suit. The OLED viewfinder actually made others exclaim out loud when I showed it to them – it’s like looking through the viewfinder of an SLR rather than staring at a tiny screen.
To give it its full title, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000EB is, by any yardstick, a truly excellent camera.
It features in top position in the Bridge Camera category with 3 out of 5 of the major photographic publications we surveyed and was highly placed by the others. Serious photographers enthuse over it and it seems from our research the only negative feedback refers to personal preference.
Some users found it too heavy or not quite the layout for their style, but even they rated it 4 out of 5 overall indicating these were just minor niggles for them.
This camera is an amazing all-rounder and should be on everyone’s shortlist.
Is it for you? If it is within your budget, you are a serious photographer who also likes to video and you don’t fancy hogging lots of kit from place to place then the Panasonic FZ1000EB really does deserve serious consideration.
We have no hesitation in highly recommending this camera because even with the hefty price tag it is still great value for money.
If you feel this is outside your price range have a look at Panasonic’s Lumix FZ200 here for over £300 less.
